2013 Newsletter

It has been a very satisfying and productive 2013. Here’s the latest on our community support and fundraising at Karen’s Kids. We are expanding our reach while continuing the Arongen based focus of the foundation.

2nd Annual Golf Tournament – raised $9,600 this year! We had 80 golfers and another beautiful July 26th at Eagle Crest. Special thanks to our 48 sponsors and donors who were a major contributor to our success.

Jonesville Volunteer Fire Department – donated $684.10 representing the proceeds from their breast cancer awareness T-shirt sales. This was a wonderful gesture by a great group that serves our community every day.

Dorothy O’Days Winter Fundraiser – raised $2,927 for Karen’s Kids in January. Owners Chris and Kathy DiFiore donated a portion of the night’s receipts and there was a silent auction and drink and food specials. Arongen teachers and staff came out in force. These proceeds and additional donations from Karen’s family and friends were presented to Arongen at their Random Acts of Kindness Assembly on March 1st.

Here’s how Arongen is helping children using Karen’s Kids funds:

• Weekend Meals BackPack Program – in partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY and the Arongen PTA, Karen’s Kids is providing the resources to help 15 children from Arongen and Shatekon for the school year. The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child-friendly, shelf-stable and easily consumed. Bags are packed each week by school staff and discreetly distributed to participating children every Friday afternoon.
• Musical instruments for several students are again being provided this school year using Karen’s Kids funds.
• The Karen’s Kids Fund continues to provide school supplies and snacks to those children who need a little extra help.
• Arongen staff are working with families to see who may need coats and boots this winter and will use Karen’s Kids funds to provide whatever is needed.

Karen’s Place Memorial – Troop 6 Eagle Scout Nicholas Cavanaugh along with Karen’s Kids, the PTA and Arongen Elementary Principal Ben Roberts, constructed a beautiful garden and benches on the Arongen grounds. Karen’s Place is located adjacent to the library/YMCA walking trail just across from the office entrance at Arongen. Arongen students in the PTA’s Garden Club also planted a butterfly garden and installed a bird bath and feeders at Karen’s Place. They have also done quite a bit of maintenance and upkeep.
