      2015: A rewarding year!

It has been a very rewarding 2015 for Karen’s Kids, Arongen Elementary and the community. Thanks to all of our supporters, we continue to build community spirit and provide for children who need some extra help.

4th Annual Golf Tournament – raised $12,500. It was a warm and beautiful day on July 27, perfect for golf at Eagle Crest. The tournament is our major fundraiser and is held on or near Karen’s birthday of July 26. This year we had 86 golfers, 30 sponsors and 58 raffle prizes. Everyone had a great time and it was wonderful to be together with family and friends on this special day.

Arongen Playground – On May 16-17, Karen’s Kids assisted parents and volunteers from Arongen PTA to build a new playground at Arongen. This event was the culmination of many months of fundraising and community outreach by the PTA. Karen’s Kids donated the proceeds from last year’s golf tournament to the effort as well. The new modern playground provides children of all ages with an opportunity to climb, explore and have fun!

Arongen PTA Community Ziti Dinner – Karen’s Kids helped the Arongen PTA with planning, resources and serving at this community-building event held on February 6. It was great to see the several hundred students and their families coming together to enjoy fine food, music and conversation.

Here’s how Arongen is helping children using Karen’s Kids funds:
      • Weekend Meals Backpack Program – in partnership with the Regional Food Bank of Northeastern NY and the Arongen PTA, Karen’s Kids is again providing the resources to help 15 children from Arongen and Shatekon for the school year. The program provides backpacks filled with food that is child-friendly, shelf-stable and easily consumed. Bags are packed each week by volunteers and discreetly distributed to participating children every Friday afternoon.
      • Koda Kares Holiday Meals Program – Karen’s Kids and the Arongen PTA is working with a team at Koda Middle School to provide meals to children and families in need over long holiday breaks. The Thanksgiving effort was very successful and the team is planning a support effort over the upcoming Winter Break.
      • Musical instruments, clothing, school supplies, snacks and lunches are again being provided this school year using Karen’s Kids funds.

Karen Field Kindness Award – Karen’s Kids presented the second annual Karen Field Kindness Award in June, which is given to recognize an Arongen student who demonstrates exceptional kindness, generosity and grace serving others. The 2015 recipients are Brendan Austin and Victoria Ines. Both students are active in the community and are kind and respectful to their fellow classmates. They are great role models. Their names have been added to the plaque in the Karen’s Kids display at Arongen.

New Principal Mr. Andrew Hills joins Arongen – Karen’s Kids would like to welcome Mr. Andrew Hills who took over as the new Principal at Arongen at the end of November. Karen’s Kids would also like to thank former Principal Ben Roberts for his vision and dedication to Karen’s Kids. He was instrumental in helping us get started and his unwavering support and focus on the students and staff has allowed us to make a difference in the lives of many children. We look forward to working with Mr. Hills to continue to serve children in need at Arongen.

        2013 Newsletter

It has been a very satisfying and productive 2013. Here’s the latest on our community support and fundraising at Karen’s Kids. We are expanding our reach while continuing the Arongen based focus of the foundation.

2nd Annual Golf Tournament – raised $9,600 this year! We had 80 golfers and another beautiful July 26th at Eagle Crest. Special thanks to our 48 sponsors and donors who were a major contributor to our success.

Jonesville Volunteer Fire Department – donated $684.10 representing the proceeds from their breast cancer awareness T-shirt sales. This was a wonderful gesture by a great group that serves our community every day.

Dorothy O’Days Winter Fundraiser – raised $2,927 for Karen’s Kids in January. Owners Chris and Kathy DiFiore donated a portion of the night’s receipts and there was a silent auction and drink and food specials. Arongen teachers and staff came out in force. These proceeds and additional donations from Karen’s family and friends were presented to Arongen at their Random Acts of Kindness Assembly on March 1st.

        • The Karen’s Kids Fund continues to provide school supplies and snacks to those children who need a little extra help.
        • Arongen staff are working with families to see who may need coats and boots this winter and will use Karen’s Kids funds to provide whatever is needed.

Karen’s Place Memorial – Troop 6 Eagle Scout Nicholas Cavanaugh along with Karen’s Kids, the PTA and Arongen Elementary Principal Ben Roberts, constructed a beautiful garden and benches on the Arongen grounds. Karen’s Place is located adjacent to the library/YMCA walking trail just across from the office entrance at Arongen. Arongen students in the PTA’s Garden Club also planted a butterfly garden and installed a bird bath and feeders at Karen’s Place. They have also done quite a bit of maintenance and upkeep.
